Keim Soldalit exterior masonry paints adds so much more!

To McConnells , the benefits of long-life Keim Exterior Masonry paints are easy to understand.  Keim’s next generation Soldalit (as shown on the above Church) is Keim’s new Mineral Silicate exterior paint with added simplicity for application by Painting Contractors and DIYer’s.

While many specifiers & property owners  will use economy film forming masonry paints these will have to be recoated every five years or so.  Over the years breathability is increasingly impaired.  Mineral Silicates offer an economic long-life alternative with extreme durability and weathering.  They are water repellant, breathable & very environmental friendly.  Soldalit has the additional bonus of ease of application in a variety of application situations and is supplied ready to apply without the necessity for added keim Dilution.  For further information and specification suggestions see the Soldalit page on our website with application information, data sheets etc..

Keim Mineral Silicate paints correctly applied have a life expectancy of up to 15 years before recating.  Recoating every five years or so with other paints seems like a heck of a lot of time, effort, and worse reducing the breathability of your walls, don’t you think? That’s where Keim Mineral Silicate exterior paints are a better choice and are utterly different!!

McConnells -Fifty years in Business

As we reach the end of 2011, McConnells has reached the notable landmark of half a century of supplying Industrial and Specialist Paints and Adhesives and related items.   The business was originally established as an add-on to George & Arthur McConnell’s Plastic Injection moulding business as a number of Customers wanted paint for the plastic components.  (For those of you interested in the roots of our family business, a summary of that history is recorded at the Company history link on our website.)

McConnells rectifies Roof-tile colour on new bungalow to meet Planning stipulation

Compliance with the exterior colours stipulated by Planning Departments in new building development is critical.

In the case of a particular bungalow in County Leitrim, Ireland, due to a miss-communication the Builder arranged for to fit Red roof-tiles when in fact the planning permission stipulated Black roof-tiles

The Architect contacted McConnells to enquire if a coating could be supplied to cope with a life expectancy approaching ten years in the local exposure conditions.

Following reassurance to the parties, McConnells supplied its Fortacryl Q760 Roof-tile paint in Black for a two coat application in accordance with the instruction in the Product Data Sheet.

For this project, approximately 200 litres of Fortacryl Q760 Roof-tile paint in Black was supplied.

Fortacryl Q760 Roof-tile paint can be supplied in a wide range of colours including RAL and BS standards and unique colours can also be matched by McConnell’s.

McConnells helps restore the appearance of a new concrete Bridge for the Luas line in docklands

The Luas rapid transport lines are significant developments in Dublin’s infrastructure. The docklands extension called for the construction of a new bridge over the canal, in this case a concrete structure.

In common with many such bridges, the concrete substrate exhibited variations in shading and colour. Such variations may result from factors such as different rates of hydration, differing types of shuttering or varying rates of pour or indeed inconsistency in materials.

In any event the visual appearance varied from the original concept and McConnells was asked to offer a solution.

McConnells selected Keim Concretal Lasur from its Keim Mineral Paints range as this Lasur product is a low pigmentation colour wash specifically on concrete and which is available in a wide range of colours. Lasur acts as a stain which penetrates the surface, equalises colour variation while maintaining the structure and feel of the concrete appearance.

Keim Lasur is generically similar to other Keim silicate paint systems comprising a water borne potassium silicate paint binder, inorganic mineral fillers and inorganic natural earth pigments which do not fade and are UV Stable.

McConnell’s also supplied Keim MX 694 Clear to overcoat the Concretal Lasur to provide an excellent quality anti-graffiti coating on the new bridge.

Keim Royalan used for major upgrade at Tipperary General Hospital, Clonmel

After well over 100 years, it was made a Protected Structure, more for its historical rather than architectural importance. The building was of originally unrendered rubble walling with ashlar quoins and was rendered in the middle part of the last Century. This render deteriorated in part over time and a substantial portion had to be removed. Following repair and restoration of this render, the whole exterior has recently been painted as part of a major renovation and improvement programme at the Hospital, led by specialist healthcare Architects Murray O’Laoire/Brian O’Connell Associates.

Specification of the paintwork required careful consideration to ensure compatibility with the various lime and cementatious render materials identified during the surface assessment. Specialist contractors New Look Contracting were consulted and proposed Keim Royalan to provide a longlife finish which will ensure a consistent and fade free colour finish for the whole of the hospital building even over the various substrates.

Keim Royalan is a mineral silicate based paint system developed especially to withstand harsh climatic conditions such as extremes of heat and cold or severe exposure for example in marine environments. Like other Keim mineral silicate paint systems, Royalan forms a microcrystalline bond with the mineral substrate to which it is applied, ensuring longlife protection and decoration. It is breathable, resistant to the ingress of driven rain, lightfast and resistant to atmospheric pollution. It is environmentally friendly and ideally suited to the restoration of historic and listed buildings with a range of colours allowing specifiers to replicate the original colour schemes of buildings of historic importance.

The Hospital now has an attractive finish as befits its prominent position in the town. Having originally been built in the 19th Century it is still providing an important service to the community for the 21st Century.
