Keim Soldalit exterior masonry paints adds so much more!

To McConnells , the benefits of long-life Keim Exterior Masonry paints are easy to understand.  Keim’s next generation Soldalit (as shown on the above Church) is Keim’s new Mineral Silicate exterior paint with added simplicity for application by Painting Contractors and DIYer’s.

While many specifiers & property owners  will use economy film forming masonry paints these will have to be recoated every five years or so.  Over the years breathability is increasingly impaired.  Mineral Silicates offer an economic long-life alternative with extreme durability and weathering.  They are water repellant, breathable & very environmental friendly.  Soldalit has the additional bonus of ease of application in a variety of application situations and is supplied ready to apply without the necessity for added keim Dilution.  For further information and specification suggestions see the Soldalit page on our website with application information, data sheets etc..

Keim Mineral Silicate paints correctly applied have a life expectancy of up to 15 years before recating.  Recoating every five years or so with other paints seems like a heck of a lot of time, effort, and worse reducing the breathability of your walls, don’t you think? That’s where Keim Mineral Silicate exterior paints are a better choice and are utterly different!!

McConnells Paints for Newly Galvanised Metal in Exterior locations

McConnell Paints for newly galvanised metal in exterior applications including gates and fencing.

We receive frequent requests for recommendations on painting newly galvanised metal.Galvanised Gates

After many years of experience the following outlines how we suggest that you proceed:

Preparation

All recently galvanised metal must be degreased thoroughly with a solvent degreaser such as our Fortaclean A156 or detergent solution using a clean lint free cloth to remove any contamination, before any paint or primer is applied.  This is to ensure a clean surface as galvanised metal is a difficult surface for adhesion.

In summary we have a number of systems in use depending on the products to be coated and the product conditions in which they are in use.  For example some items are in domestic, low use locations while others are in more demanding Industrial & Commercial locations subject to chemical or mechanical attack.  In all cases these systems must be tested by our Customers for their particular products and application conditions.

Standard Application Conditions

For engineered items in environments subject only to climatic environmental stress (e.g. Railings, Gates) in low use applications, a single pack product maybe sufficient for protection.  When a gloss like finish is required, our system/products offered are as follows:

Fortaclean A253 T wash, which is a dilute solution of phosphoric acid which reacts with the galvanised metal to improve adhesion.   As soon as dry promptly apply-

Fortaprime Q604, which is a good quality Zinc Phosphate primer, followed by-

Fortacoat A190, which is a single pack gloss long oil alkyd topcoat.

(If a single combination Primer/Finish is required our suggestion is CombiColour which can be used in place of the individual primer & finish and this can be supplied supply in a range of colours.  This is an excellent high gloss maintenance finish and is often used in repainting applications as opposed to new galvanised.)

If a single pack Matt finish is desired Fortacoat A190 above should be replaced with Fortacoat E104 Graphite Black, which is a single pack alkyd paint, which due to its formulation provides excellent adhesion and finish to galvanised metal.

Challenging Application Conditions

Where items are subjected to more challenging environmental, chemical or mechanical attack, a two-pack system is suggested for added protection and the system/products suggested are as follows:

Fortaclean A253 T wash, which is a dilute solution of phosphoric acid which reacts with the galvanised metal to improve adhesion.   As soon as dry promptly apply-

Temacoat GPLS primer, which is a two pack epoxy primer, and when diluted 20-30%, and spray applied in a thin coatings, ensures excellent adhesion to the substrate, followed by;

Two coatings of Temadur 90, a chemically resistant two pack polyurethane paint which is available in a wide variety of colours.

At McConnells we are frequently asked about products suitable for coating Unpainted Aged Galvanised Metal, (weathered externally for at least one year).

In general, preparation should include the removal of all corrosion, white rust and mill scale either by blast cleaning, flame cleaning, needle gun, or chipping, scraping and wire brushing.

All old galvanised metal must be degreased thoroughly with a solvent degreaser such as Fortaclean A156 or detergent solution using a clean lint free cloth before any paint or primer is applied.

In summary we have a number of systems in use depending on the products to be coated and the product conditions in which they are in use.  In all cases these systems must be tested by our Customers for their particular products and application conditions.

For engineered items in exterior environments subject to chemical and mechanical stress (e.g. Civil engineering items), the products in use are as follows:

Fortaprime Q604, which is a good quality Zinc Phosphate primer for use as the initial coating.

This should be followed by one or two coatings of Temadur 90, a chemically resistant two pack polyurethane paint which is available in a wide variety of colours.

For galvanised iron sheeting and cladding in exterior environments subject to climatic environmental stress (e.g. Cladding profiles), where a single pack product and a gloss like finish is required, the products in use are as follows:

Fortaclad E34, which is a single pack solvent based gloss (or matt on request) finish, which ensures excellent adhesion and durability to the substrate, or a  highly flexible water based acrylic, Fortaclad E407.
